Sankashti Chaturti, or Sankatahara Chaturti, is a highly auspicious day dedicated to Lord Ganesha in a Hindu month. The date of Sankashti Chaturthi Vrata is Thursday, June 23, 2016. Chandrodaya or moonrise is at 9:36 PM. Sankashta Chaturthi falls during the waning phase of the moon – fourth day after the full moon (Poornima). The day is known as Sankatahara Chaturthi in South India. Fasting and visiting Ganesha temples is performed by Ganesha devotees on the day.

Fasting on Sankashti Chaturthi begins at sunrise and ends after evening puja or after sighting of the moon. Lord Ganesha Temples conduct special pujas on the day.

The significance of Sankashti Chaturthi Vrata was explained by Lord Krishna to Yudhishtira, the eldest of the Pandavas. It is also found in the Narasimha Purana and Bhavishaya Purana.

Observing Ganesh Sankashti Chaturthi is said to bring material progress, happiness and fulfillment of desires.

Lord Ganesh is known as Pillayar in Tamil Culture and the day is also referred as Pillayar Sankatahara Chaturthi.
